I was doing a bit of research to see how the playoffs are shaping up, so i thought i would share my findings with everyone.
Eastern Division
Summary
NYY has clinched the Eastern Division title and a top 4 playoff spot. TB is still in the running for one of the wildcard spots and COL is battling for a bottom wild card spot, but it will be a close one. The rest of the teams have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Western Division
Summary
PHI is 0.5 games ahead of KC for the Western Division title. If PHI wins 2 games, they clinch the Western Div title. If PHI wins 1 and loses 1, KC can over take him with 2 wins. If PHI wins 1 and ties 1, KC can tie him with 2 wins. If PHI loses 1 and ties 1, KC can over take him with 1 win and 1 tie. If PHI loses 2 then KC can clinch with just 1 win. Whichever team doesn't win the title will be battling for a lower wild card seed. The rest of the teams have been eliminated from playoff contention.
Northern Division
Summary
TEX has clinched the Northern Division title and a top 4 playoff spot. The rest of the teams are eliminated from playoff contention.
Southern Division
Summary
HOU and STL are battling for the Southern Division title. HOU is 1 game up and STL needs to win out and hope for either 1 L from HOU to finish in a tie, or 2 L to sneak in and win the division. STL is also currently in contention for a bottom playoff seed. MIN is on the outside looking in but is only 1 GB from getting the last spot.
If the season ended today the playoffs seed would look like this:
The actual seeding for #1-4 is still up for grabs. NYY holds a 0.5 game lead on TEX. HOU is 2.0 games back from #1, so it'll be a tough road if they want the top spot. More will be known after this weekend, but i think this is a good start to analyze the upcoming match ups.
