There is a total of $1,033 tied up in starting pitching on WAIVR. Between 112 SP. that comes out to about $9.22 per player on average. by this measure Porcello, who ranks in at 30 percentile should be worth about $6.42. so yes he can be looked at as over valued just based on last year's performance. But i factor in age, progression and other factors, like a shitty defense behind him....

Once you get into negatives you can't look at pt/$ and say it was a better contract. Because what you are saying is that Jonathan Sanchez at $30 is a better contract than Porcello based on this logic.

thats a valid point. all i know is there are far more over paid pitchers that didnt contribute meaningful stats, than just the bottom 6 that was listed before. or did we all forget about Ubaldo Jimenez at $8...brad

Sorry I missed the end of this debate, but fatherhood calls in the evenings...

Brad's correct. Once you go negative in WAIVR the more dollars spent actually help the appearance of the contract if you break it down by negative point per dollar. That's why I just used the worst WAIVR ranks, which had Porcello at an overall rank of 6th worst of active DLF starting pitchers in 2012.
