Minor League Drafts

Gents,

I apologize for not bringing this to the table sooner. I am wondering if anyone else is interested in trying to improve the way we draft. Making all picks tradeable would be something I would like to see. Also, combining into one draft, I think, also merits consideration. We could have the one-big-draft around this time of year, right after tags and winter meetings open up. We would need to make sure and take the requisite am0unt of time to transition so as not to affect drafts where the order is already determined. This conversation, therefore, is likely not one we would need to vote on soon, necessarily, but if anyone is interested in keeping this conversation going... thanks in advance!

I like the idea of being able to trade all our picks, as most of them end up as PTBNL anyway. I do like the separate drafts, although I think the Minor draft could be cut by a round or two with the size of our minors.

I agree with Erik. I do like having separate drafts, but the length of the minors could probably be shorter due to roster limitation (no big deal either way).

But to the main point of the thread, I do really like Trent's idea about making all picks tradable. To Erik's point, the FYP draft picks are being moved anyways as "PTBNL". If they're going to moved regardless, I think it would be best to just have it out in the open so everything is transparent and the picks are easier to track.

an idea i had, that makes the most sense logistically, would be to combine the drafts and have them happen after the FYP signing deadline in the summer. they would still use the previous seasons standings for draft order if held over the summer, but would remove the access to a draft in the winter. If we combined them together in the winter then that means that we would have to remove the summer draft and postpone it til the winter until after the IFA deadline, like what we do with the off-season draft currently. So the options are pretty much....do we want a winter draft or a summer draft.

I am for making picks tradeable. I think the more moving pieces, the greater the activity. I feel this would help the league. I think only the picks from the upcoming draft should be tradable and not future years, similar to what we have with the minor league draft picks.

I am against combining the drafts. I feel having two drafts helps rebuilding/bad/inherited teams climb out of the cellar. Combining drafts would give bad teams less to work with and make movement up and down the ladder harder.

I agree with Ray’s thoughts. The drafts shouldn’t be combined. The rich will just get richer that way. All picks should be tradable though!

I'm going to agree with everyone here and say all picks should be tradeable. It almost feels that way already but I think it would make it easier to track all picks via trade like that.

yeah i think the general consensus would be that all picks should be tradeable. but we will need a vote to pass that resolution.

Then we can discuss the length of the drafts and if they are going to be combined or not in separate votes

My opinion is that combined drafts would be a bad idea. I think that the way we have it now helps the bad teams more whether by having 2 picks to trade or getting 2 high draftees. I think what may be a good idea is to move both drafts to the offseason to give more offseason activity.

I also like having a FYP Draft and then a minors draft. I would say reduce the Minors Draft to three rounds.

Now that the vote has passed to make all picks tradeable we need to discuss combining the drafts. I understand the reasoning behind keeping them separate since that gives the bottom teams 2 high value sets of picks... Here's the issue I see though, FT only lets us have 1 draft listed, so tracking tradeable picks can only be done on FT for one set of draft picks. if we don't combine them then we are right back where we were before FT, having to manually track the trades on the spreadsheet. It is our goal to move towards full integration without losing the feel and customization of the league's settings.

I think one combined draft can still accomplish this. Having high end picks will still have value in one combined draft, but it's only the very first 1/3 or so of the first round that would possibly miss out on the top IFA if the drafts are combined. They would still get the top picks for FYPD players or they can choose to use them on IFA players. as that combined draft progresses their top picks will still have plenty of value... and with them being tradeable now, who knows if they even keep them or sell them for multiple prospects to help their rebuilds.

I get the rich get richer argument, and I would disagree to a degree. This is supposed to be a challenging league that requires a good range of player knowledge. It isn't impossible to take a team out of the cellar with smart player evaluations. Giving a team a chance at the top FYPD and the top IFA makes it a lot easier for them. For these reasons I am in favor of combining the drafts.

In the interest of Fantrax efficiency, I can support combining the drafts in order to make all picks tradeable. Of course, we could just list them all as one draft and designate that the first three rounds are FYP only and rounds 4-8 are the open draft. Then we could still draft the FYP shortly after the major league draft and do the offseason draft starting with round four.

but importing those players would have to be done at the same time. since once you start the draft import you need to complete it before the season can progress.
