After rereading through the entire conversation and taking some notes on the many ideas, concerns, and points raised I have come up with what I believe to be a solid proposal that I would like to put up for a league vote.
The proposal is a lengthy read because I need to layout the upcoming months in a step by step so everyone has a solid understanding of the idea. It goes as follows:
- The 2021 FYP draft will commence as planned, after the FYP signing period this summer. The draft order for this and the possible compensation picks from RFA bidding will be set using the 2020 standings, so nothing will change with the 2021 FYP draft.
- At the end of the 2021 season, we will set the final standings and determine the 2022 draft order.
- We will reconvene for the 2022 season in January for the Winter Meetings. As usual, this will reopen trading and kick off our rules meeting.
- The 2022 Off-Season draft will not happen in January, it will be moved to the summer to merge with the FYP draft. It will also be shortened to 4 rounds.
- The main event of the Winter Meetings will now be the free agent bidding that will start at the beginning of February.
- The new Prospect Draft will consist of 2 rounds of FYP picks, followed by the Compensation Round, and then 4 rounds of All Prospects. These last 4 rounds are where any IFA, or free agent prospects can be drafted. The first 2 rounds and the Compensation Round will be exclusively for FYP only draftees.
- These combined 6 rounds of draft picks will be added to Fantrax and they will all be tradeable.
- We currently have 5 rounds of draft picks that are tradeable and these represent the 5 rounds of the normal Off-Season draft. We will add 1 more round to the tradeable pool for the 2021 season, making a grand total of 6 rounds. None of these draft picks have been traded yet, so the total of 6 will represent the 2+4 system accordingly.
- In the summer of 2022, we will hold the combined Prospect Draft after the trade deadline, following the above described 2+4 system. This system will continue in each subsequent season.
- We would look to setup the Prospect Draft on Fantrax to mirror our current time requirements as closely as possible. So, there would no longer be a need for posting picks on Proboards. If this is not an attainable goal, then we still have PB to fall back on.
By following this road map, we don’t risk any teams losing value by removing valuable picks or just flat out skipping a draft to make a merger work. Since the current system of Winter and then Summer both follow the previous season standings, if we combined them in the Winter rather than in the summer, we would have to essentially skip an FYP draft or double up the part of the draft for one season. That is definitely not ideal.
One of the added requirements for this combined Prospect Draft would be that teams would need to have the appropriate roster space at the BEGINNING of the draft to make sure they have the space for the picks they make. The FT system may not allow you to make the pick if it makes your roster illegal, so please be aware that picks may be forfeited if the roster space is not present.
As always a majority vote is 11 teams.
