If you wish to remove a player from your team, you will need to perform a Buyout.
A Buyout is a one-time charge for half of the guaranteed salary.
If a player is signed to a 4 yr contract with $8 per year, that equals $32 guaranteed. In order to buy him out during his first season, you would pay $16. The guaranteed contract portion is only applicable to years that have not been completed. Once, the buyout is performed and the charge applied to your salary cap, the player will be removed from your roster and entered back into the free agent pool.
You will be allowed to buy out a Franchise Player only after the conclusion of the 2nd year of the FR contract in question.
